How We Build Weftly: Using It on Our Own Newsroom

Weftly is built by the people who use it to make The Woven Record. Mike Lagerquist is customer zero, and his requests, like the Discord client, shape the product.

Weftly is built by the people who use it. Becki True and Steve Jarvis build it, and Mike Lagerquist uses it to make The Woven Record, a local video news site in Mankato, Minnesota. What Mike runs into becomes what Weftly does next.

What does “customer zero” mean?

Mike is the first user of every new Weftly feature. In the video, Becki tells him: “you’re customer zero,” and his feedback “drives a lot of what we do.” The team is on both sides of the product, building it and using it to publish The Woven Record, so a feature gets judged by whether it makes the next video easier to make.

Becki puts the result this way: “we are doers as well as shapers of the product.” Instead of guessing what creators need, the question is usually “what if we tried to do this,” or “can we do this instead to make it work easier.”

Why does Weftly have a Discord client?

Mike needed to do things Weftly couldn’t do yet. To unblock him, the team built a chat interface in Discord.

How the Discord client brands a clip, and why Weftly is built as a platform.

Here is how Mike uses it. He tells the chat he wants to brand a clip and links the clip’s output from a job he already ran in Weftly. The Weftly bot, weftly-hermes, replies with five questions: which brand, the guest’s name and title, any URLs for the description, whether to add a “Like & Subscribe” lower-third near the end, and whether to add the brand end card. Mike answers all five in one message, the bot repeats his answers back exactly as written, and he replies “yes” to lock them in. Some of this he used to do by hand in YouTube. Hermes also steers him back when a command isn’t quite right, and he says it’s polite: it has him asking “I would like to please brand this clip.”

Discord conversation in which Mike Lagerquist asks the weftly-hermes bot to brand a clip. The bot lists five questions: brand, guest name and title, URLs for the description, a Like & Subscribe lower-third, and a brand end card. Mike answers Woven Record; Georgia "Jo" Schultz, longtime Mankato family; none; yes; yes. The bot confirms the answers exactly as written and asks him to reply yes to lock them in, and Mike replies yes. The branding conversation in Discord, from the first question to Mike’s confirmation.

What does it mean that Weftly is a platform?

Weftly has two layers. Underneath are the compute and the message endpoints. On top are clients that people talk to. chat.weftly.ai is a chat client the team built, and the Discord client is another. Becki’s point is that the back end doesn’t care which client calls it: it says how to talk to it, what you can ask, and what it will give back. If your team works in a different tool, you can build a client for that. Agent for the Agentless covers the chat client and building your own.

What is next?

As of October 1, 2026, the next item on the roadmap is the multi-camera edit. The Woven Record team already combines camera angles in its own production, and Weftly is where they plan to bring it. For how that works today, see From Raw Multicam Footage to a Published Video, Without Touching a Timeline.

What do you want to build?

Becki and Mike say they would like to work with other creators and small businesses that want to make video without hiring an editor. If something you need isn’t there, tell them. Open chat.weftly.ai to try it. Current promo codes are listed at weftly.ai/offers.
